This turned up once upon a time, turns out there is a whole rules section for noticing if someone used a Disipline. Will describe below, but note that the page numbers may change based on which revision of you rules you are looking at. Most of this is on p281 under Noticing Attacks. Subterfuge is on p97. Awareness on p92. Note that if the attack is obvious, such as Dread Gaze or ham handed Dominate then no test is required. The Defender may not be aware of what exactly you just used, but they know you did something. - Make the Test.
- If attacker wins, nobody notices. Note that the attacker cannot lose for powers that do not involve a test, such as Awe.
- If defender wins, they become aware that "something" was done. Whether they know what was done is the purview of Lore, whether the possess the Discipline in question, past experience, etc.
After the test is resolved, anyone may employ Awareness provided they were looking at the Attack or Defender when the test was performed. (Mental+Awareness) vs. (Mental+Willpower)or(Mental+Subterfuge), the Defender of this challenge (who was the attacker of the original Discipline challenge) picks which stats they use to defend. If the Attacker wins, then they are aware that "something" has happened.Note that the Defender of the original Discipline test can employ Awareness to detect the use of a power, even if they lost the original test.Okay, the part that I have not figured out is how Subterfuge works in all of this. The Subterfuge ability allows for once per night, making the Attacker of a Discipline challenge appear to be someone else (read the power for the long version, p97). I don't know how that mixes into the above. Some cases are:
- When the Defender of an Awareness test uses Subterfuge then they are employing this power
- If the Attack of a Discipline challenge loses, then they can follow up by Attacking with Subterfuge to redirect suspicions
- This power has no test, you just burn the usage when you get busted in order to redirect
I am assuming that the single use refers to the Discipline usage that is being covered, and not how many targets are being deceived.
